EKLEGO

EKLEGO, a concert celebrating the Cork musical legacy of the teacher, performer and composer, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, is presented by tutors and alumni who were at the heart of the vibrant “community of sound” which Mícheál nurtured in the 1980s and 1990s at University College Cork. Curated by Mícheál’s former student, long-time collaborator and friend, Mel Mercier, the concert features music from Mícheál’s diverse projects during this ground-breaking period of creativity in teaching and music-making at UCC. Performers include Bobby Gardiner, Colm Murphy, Mary Mitchell-Ingoldsby, Niall Vallely and the re-formed Rectory Céilí Band. The programme includes music from Aloys Fleischmann’s monumental collection of some 6,000 dance tunes and song airs, Sources of Irish Traditional Music C. 1600-1855 (1998), a project that Mícheál worked on as Assistant Editor. The concert also features ‘EKLEGO for Tape and Traditional Musicians’, which Mícheál co-created with a group of his UCC students during an unforgettable weekend of music making in 1989 at Sulán Studios, Ballyvourney, County Cork.

EKLEGO: From the Greek meaning ‘to choose, to select, to pick up’, it is cognate with the Danish word Leg as in Leg Godt – the motto for the game Lego meaning ‘to play well’.” (Ó Súilleabháin 2016)
