John Kennedy curates an exhibition of work from the extensive collection at Dublin’s Kevin Kavanagh Contemporary Art Gallery. A pop-up gallery in Clonmel will be the venue for this special exhibition that brings some of Ireland’s most exciting artists to Tipperary for festival week.
Kevin Kavanagh is situated in Dublin’s City Centre just south of the River Liffey. It represents Irish & International artists at home and abroad and is considered one of Ireland's most dynamic contemporary visual art galleries.
John Kennedy is a painter who lives and works in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. He completed a BA in Fine Art at Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork in 1996. He has recently completed the Turps Correspondence Course in Painting through Turps School in London. His paintings are concerned with the idea of abandonment and the evolution of the subject matter. The abandonment of objects that may previously have performed an important function. In John’s paintings of objects lingering near to redundancy, the cracking spreads across the image like an infection.
There is a silence and distance in the paintings, just outside of range of overhearing what is going on, evoking a feeling of being outside looking in. His works explore the physical properties of paint. Building up surfaces by layering the different mediums, the paintings are constructed by allowing the mediums to react with each other. The mixture of materials yields a multitude of textures. The last layer creates the ground onto which the final image is painted. His work falls between abstraction and realistic representation. John has curated several exhibitions including ‘From Beyond’ – The Lockdown Series as part of the Clonmel Junction Arts Festival and Remnants group show involving leading Irish artists.
