 Gina Oberoi-Engela

Irish Mezzo Soprano Gina Oberoi-Engela began her musical training at a young age, training in piano while also singing in choirs. She later went on to study music with vocal performance at the Dublin Institute of Music and Drama in Ireland. Here she completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees receiving honours in both. She then furthered her vocal training working with teachers and coaches in Italy, UK, the London Opera Studio and the Bayrische Staats Oper Munich. In her early career she worked with professional choirs as part of the Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival in Germany, Czech Republic and Japan.

Her solo career began with many of Ireland’s prominent choral societies, where she performed works including Handel’s Messiah, Duruflé’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Mozart’s Solennes de Confessore, and Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’. She performed the alto solo in the Irish premieres of Dan Forest’s ‘Jubilate Deo’ and Martin O’Leary’s ‘Psalmus’.

On the concert platform Gina performed in Bucharest, Romania for the 1916 Commemorations, where she was a guest artist. Previous engagements include performances of Respighi’s Il Tramonto, Mahler’s Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen and several Opera concerts. Gina was invited to be the solo guest artist in the annual Edmond Rice Gala in Wexford, Ireland.

On the opera stage she was a Company Artist for Cork Opera Ireland for their 2018/2019 season, where she sung the roles of ‘Kate’ in Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ and ‘Second Bridesmaid’ in Mozart’s ‘Le nozze di Figaro’. Gina also sung the title role in Purcell’s Opera “Dido and Aeneas with Opera Workshop. This year Gina has been delighted to sing in several projects with Limerick Opera.

Operas excerpts include ‘Werther’, ‘Cherubino’ in Mozart’s ‘Le nozze di Figaro’, ‘Hansel’ in Humperdinck’ ‘Hansel and Gretel’, and ‘Larina’ in Tchaikovsky’s ‘Eugene Onegin’. Gina worked in professional opera chorus’ in Puccini’s Tosca and Madama Butterfly, and Mascagni’s ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’.

Gina Oberoi-Engela is also a singing voice specialist, working in vocal health and habilitation.

 

Martin O’Leary

Martin O'Leary was born in Dublin, Ireland in1963.  From 1981 to 1985 he read music at Trinity College, Dublin, and successfully completed an M. Litt in composition there in 1988,  the only person to hold this distinction.  He successfully completed a Ph. D at the same college, a study of some of the works of English composer Havergal Brian in 2004. Since 1991 he has been lecturing at Maynooth University, where he became a full time member of the staff in the Department of Music in 1993.

Martin has written over a hundred works for varied forces including ‘Psalmus Invitatorius ‘ (2018-19), for 5 soloists, three choral groups, organ and orchestra, commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the Maynooth University Choral Society, a Piano Concerto (1987-90), vocal works including ‘Lúireach Phádraig’(2015)  written for Maynooth Chamber Choir and performed in the U.S.A and China, and chamber works including ‘Avanti’ for piano trio, written for the Muzika Trio of Wisconsin(2013). As a pianist, Martin has championed music by his fellow Irish composers for over 25 years, and has played their music in Israel, Japan and the U.S.A, as well as throughout Ireland. He has premièred works by John Buckley, Paul Hayes, Kevin O’Connell, John McLachlan and Ryan Molloy.
