Dulsori
Dulsori dance, synchronized percussion, song and martial arts - Experience the explosive power of the Korean Arts "Their pace never lets up. It's a gripping performance of delicious percussion, crashing drums and rabble-rousing vocals." - The Guardian, 1 August 2005 -
Dulsori ( literally 'wild beat' ) was formed in 1984 to preserve traditions and to perpetuate the form in a contemporary context. Commemorating their 20th anniversary, this energetic and passionate troupe has staged hundreds of international performances and recently toured to Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and across Europe.
"We aim to break the barriers between the players and audience in staging our performances," says Moon Kap-Hyun, director of Dulsori. "People, particularly urbanites tend to long for the state of nature, and we want to quench their thirst for it." A vigorously pulsating production, Dulsori's passionate and colorful performance showcases the unique heritage and spirited origins of traditional Korean culture.
The vast majority of music is the sound of the city. From Chicago blues to Sowetan kwaito, via soca from Port of Spain, New York hip-hop and Rio's favela funk, the urban environment has produced some of the wildest, most intense music ever created. But not all of it. For starters, take the Korean percussive style known as Pungmul. Summoning and celebrating the elements, the style was created by the rural farmers of Korea with these drumming agriculturalists using their instruments to imitate the sounds of the natural world - thunder, lightning, rain and wind. With their name translating as 'wild beat', Dulsori are among South Korea's most renowned drumming ensembles. Their energetic, elemental performances are raw and passionate affairs as the world's most enthralling drumming troupes. Dulsori never fail to thrill and excite.
