This year’s Junction Festival banner project theme is ‘Journeys of the Imagination’ and the resulting displays to be hung in the town will depict a variety of journeys as brought to life and made by the participating schoolchildren - a kaleidoscope of colourful, imaginative journeys to be displayed as novel banners on the main streets of Clonmel before and during the Festival.
The Banner Project starts by asking –
• Where does our imaginations take us?
• How has and does our imagination transform our world and our surrounding?
Through structured activities and combined imaginative exploration, we will go back and forth in time to find out how humanity has progressed with creations of the weird and wonderful. We will look at examples from famous artists, naturalists, scientists and technicians (geniuses of the imagination) who have led in new ways of seeing and experiencing the world. To this end, we are proposing to use interactive white boards wherever they are available.
Children will be further introduced to assemblage and construction techniques, using basic tools and offering the opportunity to increase their hand dexterity and practical making skills.
The final banners will capture journeys such as flights of fancy, encounters with magical and mythical beings, fantastic creatures, the wonders of this world on land, sea and outer space - as well as incredulous otherworldly realms. We will explore discoveries and inventions that have changed life for better and for worse - flying objects, magical machines, and some wicked ones, superpowers, heroes, robots and alien encounters.
Imagination helps children learn about their world, cope with problems in creative ways and helps them become more balanced teenagers and adults. This three sessions-workshop series will encourage children to trust the power of imagination, their creative instincts, learn to problem-solve and build up their creative resilience in the face of challenges in the world today.
